Art Insight Part 2

Wylie and I spent this weekend going to the LACMA (LA County Museum of Art) indulging in friendship and ample free time for browsing. Each day was a totally different experience ending in picnic style lunch on the terrace and a long nap on the way home. Saturday: All about the exhibits We met up with Katie, Michael, Nova and Willa for a two hour walk through the new Broad Contemporary Building. It's a fabulous collection with everything from Jeffrey Koons to Jenny Holzer and Cindy Sherman. In fact they had a whole room of her photos stacked floor to ceiling. Wylie and Nova enjoyed climbing on the benches (much to the worry of some guards). The two of them interacted well and actually "experienced" the art somewhat together. They both wandered around the Richard Serra and didn't touch it! They also checked out the room with massive table and chair installation with amusement, although I think they still experience undertable enjoyment at home. It was nice to be with art lovers and get the rejuvenation that art museums bring to me. Sunday: All about creativity Wylie and I met up with Nadya and Mingus for a fun filled three hour exploration of the creativity that the art museum offers to children. We spent about 1 hour in the Broad Childrens Gallery which is an area with everything from basic architecture pieces for building, to blocks and postcards, to paint and pastels for children to use. All the art work is displayed for all to see. It wasn't the madhouse I expected and for the most part everyone participated well together. The activities are geared for a slighter older group but Mingus and Wylie did well. We also tried to participate in the NextGen specific art activity but alas it was too "grown-up" for the boys. Scissors and Glue. Wylie tried to put the glue on his lips and wasn't interested in the paper. Mingus was perfectly happy watching his mom take care of the project. Needless to say we abandoned the tent. The outing ended with Mingus and Wylie having a mango, cheese, dry cereal and water snack in the shade before running wild to check out the terrace. In both cases we are looking to catch up with our friends again at the museum.
