The Derecho Storm Revelation

On Friday June 29, 2012, Burke experienced a rare summer storm referred to as a Derecho. These storms occur once every 15 years or so AND only when the atmospheric conditions are exactly in alignment. Think end of the world alignment. At least it feels that way when it hits.

The Derecho hit at 10:30pm with hot wind clocking at 80 to 90 mph followed within 5 minutes by a force of rain that came in with a brute force. The lightening was the type that lights up the entire sky and house. A sense of "Something Wicked This Way Comes."  Within seconds of the storm hitting we started hearing the large booms of transformers blowing around the area. Our power went out almost immediately with none of the flicker that would indicate it would be a short outage.


The outage lasted until early morning Monday July 2, 2012. We then lost power again it was a tease but we had a generator to keep the internet up so I could work. Power was fully restored late Monday night. We tossed the contents of both refrigerators and  the freezer. Our trash company picked up our trash on Tuesday morning even though we normally do not get the Tuesday pick up. The good thing to this is that I have been in England on travel, Wylie was in North Carolina with Nora, and Wyatt was living the bachelor lifestyle for the week prior so we were pretty empty in comparison to our neighbors.

So what is the revelation?

The refrigerator can say a ton about who you are and what you think "food" is and what you would eat on a regular basis. Just looking at this I would say we have a cheese, condiment and sausage problem. The random square meat is Wyatt's Livermush.

BBQ needs

Pierogies make a fast dinner and are mostly healthy right?

Granted these have been in the freezer too darn long. you will see more of these too.

Cheap, easy, and yummy. 

THIS JUST BUGS ME. A Bell and Evans 2.5 pounder. Mostly frozen but we had to chuck it because even if we grilled it where on earth were we going to store the leftovers? 

Okay so I painstakingly made my turkey stock. There are several of these. I've been using them throughout the year for cooking. BEST STOCK EVER. This sucks. Now I have to buy the store crap.

Local farm sausage. At least I can get more of this at the farmers market. 

Chicken breasts that do not weigh over 1lb each. 

This looks gross. It was a very specially picked out New York Strip Steak from Balduccis.  

I have a 5 year old okay. We actually read the ingredients. No fillers. 

These needed to be chucked a few months ago. Not sure why we had them. Must have been hungry at Trader Joes.

Time to replace anyway to non-baby style as Wylie finally hit weight to move up to a child version of acidopholous.

Bought this Friday morning too. Thank god we have the juice box version of soy milk for Wylie.

FULL DISCLOSURE: In laws fridge died a few weeks ago. We held some of their food for them. The Parkay and Kens is from their fridge. The lemonade is mine. 

Our lives are never complete without Boyobel cheese and cracker barrell jalepeno cheese. NEVER.

This is another great meal in the making. The orange items are fresh frozen apricots.

The last of the BBQ from last year. Time to make some more.
