Composting Thoughts
I was reading up on composting in my handy guide that I received from the Farmer's Market in Hollywood. It has information about green and brown items and the right mix for good compost. It also has information about worm composting which sounds too in-depth for me and not really what my garden currently needs.
Right now my compost is more green than brown. This means it will get hot quickly and might get a little stinky. It also means it will break down quickly but also be too liquidy. I need to add brown to it. Some brown items around the house.
Newspaper (not colored)
Paper Towels (dirty okay as long as no fat or meat)
Dry leaves
I'm hoping to add a bit of brown but it's definitely turning into good compost.
Green items that you cannot add which to mean seem like a no-brainer but it's written down in the book...WEEDS. I wouldn't think you would want weeds in the compost as they go to seed quickly and all you would be doing is purposely planting weeds.
One other thought...It's really easy to compost. It cuts down on trash, the scraps go in a non-stinky container then go in the big compost bin. I don't have to feel so bad about the paper towels that we do use (YES I HAVEN'T FULLY RID THE HOUSE OF PAPER TOWELS) because those too can go in the bin.
I'll let my three national readers know more as it comes up.
