Sunday Farmer's Market

Wyatt had lots of homework and reading this weekend. Wylie and I were out of ideas for most of the weekend leaving it open to doing lots of nothing...which is FABULOUS. So this morning when he woke up Wylie excitedly told me the following two things: 1. "We eat pancakes for breakfast" 2. "Farmer's Market?" What could I do but oblige. We did make pancakes which are the yummiest and fluffiest and thickest. Goat's milk, no egg, fresh maple syrup. We headed off to the Larchmont Farmer's Market, bags in hand, parked three blocks away only to find the market wasn't there! There was a street fair going on sponsored by every elementary school within a 10 mile radius. We took a tour of the street before getting back in the car deciding to go to the Hollywood Farmer's Market. That market while big tends to be really crowded, lacking in some respects but good in others. It's not as neighborly seeming and the cheese guy isn't always there. The bread folks are okay but it's really more of a see and be seen and POLITICAL farmer's market than Larchmont. It does have a Farmer's Market group stand always ready with stickers and balloons, the date guy (did you know over 15 varieties just in California alone?), and of course the banjo player. So what did we score local, in season, and new to Wylie? 1lb Wax Bean (yellow beans) 4 organic homegrown Bartlett pears 3 Camio apples 1 Emperor's Castle plum/apricot type fruit (FREE, well actually a smile from Wylie was all it cost!) 1 Kombucha Squash 1 Exquisite Squash 2 large sweet onions 2lbs Yukon gold fingerling potatoes 2lbs Yukon gold potatoes Made a onion, stilton, potato pie tonight. Tomorrow is a squash brown rice risotto, and then on Tuesday beans, asparagus, and salmon salad. What I was tempted but did not buy... End of the season peaches End of the season strawberries (this were incredibly tempting but really pricey) White corn Lots of different swiss chard. Need to find a recipe first to try before buying and letting rot in fridge.
